Stapled Sled Kite
The Stapled Sled is THE classroom kite. Teachers say, âWe always have the material, anyone can make it, and it always flies!â
Sled kites, made with minimum materials and simple construction, are classroom favorites. With two patterns, butcher paper, string, tape and a stapler, the Stapled Sled is also the choice for ongoing, do-it-yourself, learning-center kitemaking.
The measurement of the vertical spar denotes the size of a sled kite. Stapled Sleds can be scaled down to 10" in lightweight paper, and up to 36", which may not be the upper limit, but is close to what stapled paper spars can sustain in a good wind. Sleds under 18" generally require tails for stabilization. Well-made larger Hornbeams fly well without tails. The Hornbeam is a sled variation by Guy Aydlett.
The diagrams are for a 24" Hornbeam, but any sled design can be easily tried in stapled paper. Cut the pattern and add an extension on the spar line-3" for a 24" kite, 4" for a 36". If you scale this kite, make the strip pattern one-half as wide as the spar area width.
Materials: tough, lightweight paper
strapping tape
bridle string, 3 times the finished width of the kite
Tools:scissors, yardstick, pencil, stapler, marking pen
1.Cut out and open up the kite. Lay the folding strip pattern on each wing in turn, matching A-A and B-B, and using the strip as a rule to draw the fold lines on the kite.
2.Folding the wing towards the center of the kite, crease on the A-A line. Fold and crease again, bringing the first crease to meet the B-B line. Staple the folds at the ends and at 2" intervals.
3.Tie a secure loop in each end of the bridle line and tape in place as shown. Find the center of the bridle and tie a loop. The flying line ties through this loop.
